Slash Subnets

I always forget this stuff. I'm a programmer not a network guy so I don't really try to remember this stuff. So now you don't either, bookmark this page and you'll always know what the hell a slash twenty four is.
To connect to the console port of a cisco router do this:
  1. Connect the blue cisco cable to your serial port of your computer
  2. Connect the other end to the console port of the router
  3. Boot up your computer
  4. Open your serial terminal program In windows I use Hyperterminal, on OpenBSD(*nix) I use minicom.
  5. Configure your connection for 9600bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control
  6. That should do it, you're all set, when you open the connection you should see the cisco router
  7. If you don't know what to do from here, you might want to read Cisco Cookbook

Rattling around the back of my head is a disturbing image of something I saw at the airport... Now I'm remembering, those giant piles of computer magazines right next to "People" and "Time" in the airport store. Does it bother anyone else that half the world is being told all of our hard-won secrets of computer technology? Remember how all the lawyers cried foul when "How to Avoid Probate" was published? Are they taking no-fault insurance lying down? No way! But at the current rate it won't be long before there are stacks of the "Transactions on Information Theory" at the A&P checkout counters. Who's going to be impressed with us electrical engineers then? Are we, as the saying goes, giving away the store? -- Robert W. Lucky, IEEE President
